The 5 top wheat-producing countries contribute significantly to the global food supply as they comprise almost half of the total wheat production in the world. It is estimated that emerging nations consume over 75 percent of global wheat output, while wheat accounts for around 25 percent of total grain production worldwide.

European Union:

  • European Union emerged as the winner in terms of wheat production during the marketing year of 2020-21, it produced around 135,800 thousand metric tons of wheat, accounting for more than one-fifth of global wheat output.

  • According to Eurostat France, Germany and the United Kingdom had been the largest wheat producing EU member countries over the last 10 years.

  • In 2019, the United Kingdom produced around 16.22 million metric tons of wheat, worth approximately 2.44 billion British pounds.

China:

  • Runner-up China produced around 134,250 thousand metric tons of wheat during the 2020-21 period.

  • China has a major impact on global grain market dynamics. The country produces around 126 million metric tons of wheat each year.

  • Wheat is grown in 30 Chinese provinces, with Henan and Shandong accounting for over 40% of the country’s wheat output.

  • Around 24 million hectares of China’s farmland are engaged in wheat cultivation.

India:

  • India is one of the world’s leading wheat producers. It ranks third with a volume of 107,592 thousand tons during 2020-21.

  • Kansas, Northern Dakota, Montana, Washington, and Oklahoma are the leading wheat-producing states in the United States.

  • According to the USDA, there are eight kinds of wheat produced in the nation.

  • Durum wheat (used to make pasta)

  • Hard red winter wheat

  • Hard red spring wheat

  • Soft white wheat

  • Hard white wheat

  • Winter wheat, which accounts for 70-80 percent of overall production in the United States (often used in bread making due to its high gluten content).
